Post-Graduation in Mathematics and Opportunities

Hi, my name is Saumya Anand! I am a Post Graduate in Mathematics, 2019 batch, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela. Before that, I did B.Sc (Hons.) Mathematics from Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi. I choose Mathematics as my key subject for graduation and post-graduation because studying Mathematics opens various career opportunities. I have always had an analytic mind and loved to solve problems. A Mathematics problem is simply a puzzle that can be solved by the right blend of analysis, precision, and patience. nn Mathematics itself is a vast subject, which firstly branches out into Pure and Applied Mathematics. As the name suggests, Applied mathematics deals with the applications of Mathematics, whereas Pure Mathematics answers the question ‘Why we are doing, what we are doing?’ For instance, the most basic example can be applying mathematics for any number x, ‘x+0=0’, whereas Pure Mathematics answers why x+0 is equal to 0. Applied mathematics contains topics like Integral Calculus, Vector Calculus, Partial Differential Equation etc., and Pure Mathematics contains topics like Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra etc. In graduation, I got to study a bit about all of these subjects. After graduation, I appeared for the entrance exam, IIT-JAM. Through it, an applicant can get admission in any of the IITs, NITs and IISERs. Based on my score, I got admission at NIT Rourkela. The curriculum and the style of teaching over there was starkly different from that of IPCW, DU. Over here, I studied new subjects like Topology, Functional Analysis, Fuzzy Set theory, amongst others. A particular focus was on using various programming languages, like R, MATLAB, Mathematica, to make mathematical models related to the course work. I also did a research project in my final year, which focused on Dilation and Reflection Wavelet sets in both single dimension and multidimensional. During my two years of Post-Graduation, I also interned for two months at the reputed Chennai Mathematical Institute under the tutelage of Dr R Sridharan. The atmosphere at the institute is perfect for any budding researcher in the sciences. nn n Coming to career options after pursuing the Mathematical sciences, a person can dip into various career opportunities. Starting with the most basic one, a person can aspire to become either a school teacher or a professor at any university or institution. To become a professor, a person must clear CSIR NET and get a more lucrative offer; it must attain a PhD in any mathematical topic of choice. Apart from this, a person can become a JRF or a Junior research fellow, wherein they need to clear CSIR NET and clear a particular cut off. A JRF can join any reputed educational institution wherever the vacancy pops up. A person can either clear GATE or NET JRF or both and become JRF. A person can also get into DRDO as a researcher if he/she has cleared GATE/ CSIR NET. Since mathematicians can also learn to code, a mathematics graduate can be appointed to any software company to be given projects according to their educational qualification. Another career option is Analytics, wherein a person can join as Business Analyst, Data Analyst or Research Analyst. Due to the current scenario, another attractive career option coming up is that of an online educator or a Subject Matter Expert/Consultant. Since Mathematics helps you develop a very analytical mind and makes you good with numbers, a Mathematician can go for a career option in the banking industry. After getting into a bank and getting to know its nitty-gritty, a person can also try Chartered Financial Analyst. In layman terms, the primary role of a CFA is to give the correct formulas for the working of the core banking solution platform to the backend developer. Apart from this, a Mathematician can also get a job as an Air Traffic Controller. However, they would need to have a comprehensive knowledge of both Mathematics and Physics. n

M.S. Cyber Security at NYIT, Vancouver

nn “Right after my elder brother moved to Canada, I too wanted to move abroad for a Master’s but honestly growing up we never thought that we’d be moving abroad and especially to Canada for higher education. Such is life. Always expect the unexpected. n Hey, I am Amitoz Kaur, currently pursuing M.S. Cyber Security from NYIT, Vancouver. I cracked the admission based on my BTech in IT, IELTS and GRE score. This two-year duration course consists of a total of 31.5 credit scores, but since I took a prerequisite, it’s 34.5 for me. Also, aspirants planning to study at NYIT, if you are getting any prerequisite course by University in their LOA’s, please confirm about it with the Dean at the University. This confirmation might help you to remove any prerequisite course if you have already studied that course or any certification related to it. nn M.S. Cyber Security is a comprehensive course that helps to develop an understanding of computer security and its impact on networks, web services, infrastructure, cybersecurity, databases, and software design. Throughout the course, one majorly learns: n To critically evaluate various technical/architectural solutions to limit risk, mitigate the effects of hostile action, and recover from attacks. n Design, implement and maintain software tools to support network security across multiple operating systems. n Oversee the information life cycle of an organization, including planning, acquisition, and implementation of secure infrastructures. n Study algorithm concepts, computer forensics, risk management and legal issues, and intrusion detection and hacker exploits. n It is a high demand-driven programme with a salary at entry-level positions starting at $63,538 per year, and most experienced workers making up to $118,154 per year in Canada. n NYIT is a U.S. based University Institute for technology committed to educating the next generation of leaders. I received the offer letter from the University three times but couldn’t make through because of some personal reasons. It was only in the last Summer intake that I finalized my admission, but even before I could pack my bags, the lockdown was announced. Since then, I’ve been in India coping with my classes according to Canadian time. They typically start from 09:00 PM IST to 06:00 PM IST and sometimes even continue till Indian afternoon. Initially, it was tough, but I got used to it. nn n The University is highly accommodative towards students and even offered extended help in terms of increased instalments with a gap for paying their tuition fees because of the COVID-19 crisis. Also, according to the University guidelines, one cannot complete 50% of his education from outside Canada. The total credit score required for my course is 34.5, and I can complete up to 17 credits from India. Further, I hope to complete 16.5 credit scores before moving to Canada in December”. n

Life at HKUST.

“I was preparing for IIT JEE when I decided to apply for Universities abroad and selected HKUST over all the other universities is because of the following reasons: nn a) Affordable tuition fee, n b) High global ranking, n c) Less time difference in comparison to India, n d) Familiarity with the place due to our family business, n e) Hong Kong is a global city. n n Hi, I am Aditya Jain. I pursued my bachelors from HKUST with majors in Industrial Engineering and minors in Business Studies. So, Industrial engineering is a bridge between technology and business. It is defined as the optimization of complex systems or processes that reduces the cost and produces better outcomes. The curriculum at HKUST helped us study everything from Engineering to Business in sizable bits. It also involves a lot of statistics and mathematics. We study technological designs and decision making in-depth to understand and improve the performance of a product or project. So, if you ask me to code, I might not be able to do it. However, I can understand the problems faced by coders. n Having scored an aggregate 90% in class 12th, I got into HKUST in the academic year 2012 based on my grades, Extra-Curricular activities, Application presentation and Interview. nn The education system here is different from India. The Bachelor’s at HKUST is for four years, but if one is from an International Board, they are eligible to skip the first year (depending from case to case). The environment at the University is very accommodating, along with the relationship shared by the students and professors. However, language can be a barrier if you have Chinese professors. Also, there is no compulsory attendance requirement for most courses, but it is essential to attend the classes in order to understand the concepts and to keep up the pace of assignment submissions. Furthermore, there is a clear shift from textbook-based education to practical project-based education. n n Being one of the oldest and most prominent financial hubs of Asia, its job market primarily focuses on Finance and Insurance sectors. While jobs are available in other sectors as well, one might have to compromise on the profile or salary. In recent years, Hong Kong has seen a rapid expansion in the IT sector as well, with lots of technology startups finding their home in Hong Kong. Civil Engineering is another program which could land you a very juicy paycheque. However, language can be a significant barrier to get into that market. nn As far as accommodation is concerned, the rent is excruciatingly high even for the tiniest rooms with limited walking space. At the University, I stayed at the best hall of residence, which was exclusive for people involved in performing arts. I play the guitar and almost everyone there is good at least one form of the performing arts. Imagine, coming back to your accommodation after an exhausting day and being a part of a live jamming session. You instantly feel uplifted, light and detoxed. Over three years, I was paired with different kinds of musicians as roommates. Also, we had this little musical community complete with music rooms, activities, jams, cultural nights, dinners etc. This little community helped us grow as musicians as well as social beings. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and one could easily knock on any door if you were craving for a jam session. Also, every accommodation had a hall master (referred to as ‘Hall mom’ in my case). A hall master is a professor residing at the accommodation, who maintained the decorum of the hall and helped students with their problems related to residing in the hall. Also, the hall would frequently invite musicians and other artists to interact with us. In my opinion, these facilities added a lot to my tenure at HKUST. nn Being a vegetarian initially, I had many problems with food at the beginning. The campus did not have a lot of vegetarians options initially. However, later, along with some friends, we found an Indian lady who agreed to cook for us in exchange for money. We raised several requests to the management about this, and later, they even added a decent amount of options in the menu at various cafes. n n During my time at HKUST, we initiated a lot of new things like HKUST’s first charity fashion show, and its first society for South Asia Culture promotion. We also founded the first chapter of ‘Alpha Kappa Psi – Chi Phi Chapter’, the first business fraternity in Asia. nn While Hong Kong is a fantastic place to live in, I felt that India has a lot more opportunity as compared to anywhere in the world. So, I came back to India after seven years of staying in Hong Kong and have started my fintech in the space of microlending and gateway services working towards creating a better, financially inclusive society. n n In a nutshell, Hong Kong would always be my second home. I am grateful that I got this opportunity and would cherish my time there always. nn One piece of advice for all the fresh aspirants, before planning to study abroad; it is essential to do extensive research about the Courses, University, job and culture of a country before investing your early crucial grooming years”. n

MSc International Business at SKEMA Business School, France

Every year, more than two lakh students plan to study at leading Business schools. So did Pruthvi Erandole, who moved to Paris in September 2018 to study for an MSc in International Business at SKEMA Business School, France. n Let us see what he has in store to share with the MOWE readers. n n “International Business is a two-year programme designed for future global business leaders that teaches students about general management skills required in the multipolar world order. The course is vast and vague but focuses on teaching business survival techniques and knowledge required for the global economy. On a broad level, the course teaches: n How firms decide to go abroad and manage their internationalization process. n How industries change and firms compete on a local as well as global level. n How markets are managed, and financial decisions are made. n How to cope with legal issues and diversity in the workplace. n The courses consist of multiple subjects that focus on interpersonal development to industrial skill requirements for goal-specific projects. For example, the courses like HRM included understanding ethics and governance of a workplace; International Business Strategy focused on business building techniques; International Negotiation – a course which focuses on trade-specific deals used by the companies and teaches us to tackle similar situations. We also had multiple case studies for various courses where we read about world events and monitored the movements in the market. Till now, one might have understood that the course requires a fair amount of understanding of corporate needs and global development. It has a lot of scope with some impressive job profiles such as Marketing Manager, Policy Analyst, Business Development Manager, Sales Manager, and Economist. n n While applying to SKEMA, I had a checklist while applying for admissions, and they outnumbered many points like: n Two-year course work in place of one, providing time to grasp, learn the subjects, and to explore the country. n Practical coursework experience. n Chance to explore new niche domains of International Business like Negotiations and Corporate Governance. n Depending upon the course, the university chooses to provide early-bird discounts and scholarships as well as minor discounts on a one-time payment of tuition fees. n University’s extended help and investments for student start-ups and business plans (Depending on the pitch of the plan and its potential). n Organization of meetups and after-work programmes with other member organizations like Erasmus that helped in networking. n There are also other organizations as well like the Maharashtra Mandal and South Indian Communities that help in networking, internships, and jobs. They organize multiple events and celebrate festivals all year round. n France is reasonable to travel to but expensive to live in. When I came here, I was worried about the expenses and the language barrier. However, I was able to manage both of them by taking a part-time job and learning the language. I recommend to anyone who is planning to study in France to at least learn the basic language before coming here. Also, to explore the country, try interacting with the locals, but, do so cautiously because theft and other violent crimes are recurrent here. The second most worrisome factor is finding accommodation in the right area. It’s really important that anyone who is planning to study here should first finalize the place that one is going to live in. Unlike other countries, not all areas are safe for residence. Before booking accommodation, please check with Indian groups or Skema Business groups on Facebook for advice. n n I plan to do an internship in France and later I’m willing to move to other parts of Europe for job purposes. I hope my experience elsewhere in Europe will be as thrilling and amusing as Paris is”. n

The Scottish Highlands.

Billy Connolly said that there are two seasons in Scotland – Winter and June. However, in Ashi Mittal’s viewpoint, there are seasons of peace, joy, hope and sheer happiness in Scotland. Let’s check out what Ashi has to share from her experience. n “Hi, I am Aashi Mittal, an MSc International Marketing (MIM) from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. I went to Scotland in 2017 after graduating in B.com Honours from Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, Delhi University. MIM, as a course, provides a broad knowledge of the practices and processes of international management. It helps in developing an understanding of national and global contexts, international managerial operations and how those contexts have an impact on organizational expectations and preferences in different cultural environments. Initially, when I decided to go abroad for my Masters, London was my prime option. As a result, I ended up applying for the University of Manchester, Cass Business School, University of Strathclyde, and Aston University but couldn’t get through. Though I wished to study in London, still I decided to go for the quality of course over a city. So, I took admission at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Being the third most populated city in the United Kingdom, Glasgow is well connected with almost all destinations at a walking distance. Apart from this, the city has a unique charm, and it’s connectivity with London, and Europe is excellent. As far as the University of Strathclyde is concerned, it is an excellent option for students planning to study abroad and especially in the United Kingdom. The university curriculum is practical and cost-effective. They even offer scholarships, and I was lucky enough to land a scholarship worth £2500 based on my previous academic records. The University has a very homely environment which was an actual selling point for me as it was my first time far away from home. The faculty is highly cooperative, and the resources available at their library too are incredibly vast and contentful. Throughout my curriculum with Strathclyde, I even had access to other private universities. However, I couldn’t find any better fit than my own University library. nn The University even organizes many seminars regularly, which are highly beneficial and practical case studies based. Strathclyde even offers many chances to develop one’s potential within and outside the class. For example, my curriculum even included a graded trip to the Isle of Cumbrae in Scotland. Throughout the journey, the faculty observed us for allotted water activities that provided an analysis of our leadership and management skills. Later, we even had to write about our experience in 1000 words describing the visit and how we benefited from it. It sounded effortless and straightforward but was challenging to put to words. The MIM is a combination of group and individual-based graded projects with Online stringent timeline-based submissions, and mind it, no plagiarism is accepted. Being a Delhi University student, I was not at all used to Online submissions and research-based work. However, I eventually found my way out. Also, the Indian community here is extremely robust. For example, I was an active member of the Strathclyde Indian Student Association (SIISA) that helps in celebrating all Indian festivals and events at a large scale. n n At last, I would recommend all the fellow aspirants planning to study abroad to take your projects very seriously and not take them as an obligation. Also, if you plan to study abroad, always remember that you have spent hard-earned money to reach here. So, it is essential, to be honest with your true potential and work hard. Enjoy your new-found freedom but don’t forget about your aim. The University has a lot to n offer but only if you wish to avail it”. n nn

A Childhood Singaporean Dream.

n “I vividly remember my mother pointing at the University adjacent to my school in Singapore and claiming, one day you’ll study here. nn Hi, I am Manjeera Pariti, a Bachelor in Computer Science from Nanyang Technology University (NTU), Singapore. Currently working with a Big Four, PwC, I’m elated to share my journey with you all. nn I was born in India, but my parents moved to Singapore in 1996 and then back to India after ten years to be with my grandparents. As a result, I completed my high school and junior college in India but always wanted to come back to Singapore for my Bachelors as my mother’s word stuck with me. Towards the end of class 12th, I started applying to a lot of Indian universities and also, to NTU. I was lucky enough to get through the university adjacent to my school and moved to Singapore for the academic year 2013. n n I always had a knack for Computer Science, probably because my dad was also a Software Engineer and would always bring home the latest computers and other gadgets in the 90’s era. Technology always kept me so fascinated as early as in class 9th that I decided to opt Computer Science in the future. Also, unlike other universities, NTU had fundamental criteria for admission. They didn’t require me to submit test results for IELTS or TOEFL or any other English exams as I had passed out from an English Medium school. Their only essential requirement was my class 10th board result, class 11th, 12th aggregate and JEE Rank. n n The education system here is hands-on, and the exposure at the university level is highly competitive, practical, full of opportunities and even provides assessment based mandatory ‘Industrial Experience/ Internship’. They don’t offer traditional placements, but towards the end, of course, a lot of companies come to organize career fairs which are very beneficial to enlighten students with a wide range of opportunities. For example, I was a very technical person until I precisely got to know what the Big Four does and what options I hold with them. The University also offers exchange programs inclusive of being a centre for Foreign Exchange for IIT students. nnnn To encourage an international student to adapt to and accept the culture here, the University usually allocates their accommodation with the local students. Further, they have exchange clubs for international students like Global Exchange mobility wherein you can network with other students coming from different parts of the world and keep a constant connection between universities and students abroad. There are several clubs and communities for sports, literature, arts, business and entrepreneurship. Likewise, many cultural events provide an opportunity to showcase talents. The University even offers academic as well as psychological counsellors on campus and keeps organizing events that help you develop to your fullest potential. n nn As far as scholarships are concerned, the universities here offer plenty of them with stipends, but under a bond of working in Singapore for a compulsory few years post completion of the course. I wasn’t aware of the full Scholarships when I availed admission, and it was when I interacted with my fellows here, but I too benefited from the MOE GRANT (Ministry of Education Grant). Through the following grant, I fetched 60% government-funded subsidy for all academic years, on a bond of working for three years in Singapore upon completion of the program. n nn Beyond the stigma attached to Southeast Asian countries, Singapore is a culturally diverse, well advanced, organized and moderately expensive country. However, the medical facilities here are highly costly for everyone. The main sectors of employment in Singapore are Banking and Finance, Management, Hedge Funds, Technology, Communication and Media and e-Commerce. The average pay scale as per Singaporean standard is about S$3600- S$4000 per month depending on the industry, with an average expenditure of S$2000-S$2500 inclusive of rent and day to date expenses. n Many people plan to step out of India post-Bachelors, but I would recommend all the aspirants to pursue Bachelors abroad as it gives them better global exposure as well a higher chance of availing Permanent Residency, especially in a country like Singapore. So, if you intend to move to Singapore as a foreigner for work or for pursuing Masters, please keep in mind that you might have to face a tad bit of trouble with getting an employment pass as the government prefers its locals over foreigners for jobs”. nn Manjeera is a trained Indian Classical dancer.
